Press Releases –
26th June from Squash New Zealand

King and Coll Top Seedings of 2017 New Zealand Senior Nationals

Paul Coll will be looking to go three in a row at the 2017 New Zealand Senior Nationals whilst Joelle King will be searching for her sixth title after missing the 2016 edition of the event.

The 2017 Men’s Draw will be headlined by current World Number 12 Paul Coll who will be returning to New Zealand for the first time since reaching his highest world ranking of 12. Coll who has had a superb 18months on the tour has seen his ranking increase since his first National title in 2015, where he then held a world ranking of 56. Campbell Grayson will come into the event seeded second and looking to claim his third senior nationals title with his last win being in 2012. Grayson has a current World Ranking of 39, with the New York based player looking to set himself up well after winning the Squash XL $15K PSA event over the weekend. Evan Williams is seeded third in the event and has performed well in the June PSA series to date having finished Runner Up in the Gibson O’Connor North Shore Open 2017 and making the Quarter Finals of the Fitzherbert Rowe Lawyers NZ International Classic 2017, ILT-Community Trust NZ Southern Invercargill Open 2017 and Squash XL PSA. Lance Beddoes will be seeded fourth for the event with Ben Grindrod, Luke Jones, Zac Millar and Chris Van Der Salm rounding out the top 8. These players will be joined by experienced players who have competed in numerous Senior Nationals such as Kashif Shuja five times National Champion. All players will be looking to put their best foot forward as they try to make their way to the final.

The 2017 Women’s draw sees current World Ranked Number 12 Joelle King seeking to add her name to the Women’s trophy for the sixth time. King who was unable to compete in the 2016 edition due to a clash with the Hong Kong Open will be sure to put her best foot forward this year to claim the title. Amanda Landers-Murphy takes the second seed and is looking strong after having claimed the Gibson O’Connor North Shore Open 2017 and Matamata PSA titles. Megan Craig takes third seeding for the event and will be looking to try and take out Landers-Murphy having lost out to her in all 3 PSA events in May/June. Emma Millar was due to take the fourth seeding however due to injury she has had to withdraw, this now sees Kaitlyn Watts stepping in to the fourth seeded position and looking to make a strong performance. Jo Shanks, Abbie Palmer, Anna Hughes and Juee Bhide round out the top 8 players.

We wish all players the best of luck as they compete towards claiming the 2017 New Zealand Senior Nationals Title.

Livestreaming of this event begins at 9am Saturday and the link can be found here (https://livestream.com/NZSportTV/events/7536685) or below in this article.

Fund Raising Quiz Nights

The final quiz night was held at HBSRC on Thursday 1st June with 13 teams, 2 from HBLT.

Thanks to all who donated prizes, including Bay City Gym (3x $100 membership vouchers) & Williams Auto Electrical (2 x $150 Marshall Battery vouchers and a Battery Pack worth $135).  We also had 6 bottles of wine donated by Hastings SC, 5 coffee vouchers from Java Bean, a Nail Voucher from Fiona Norman of Havelock North and 2 Racket Stringing vouchers from Murray Sutherland.

It was a pretty raucous night, with a number of other competitions going on.  The final tally, including the Guess the Lollies was $934.60.

Thank you, Hastings, for turning up and interacting so well. May’s quiz earned a further $615 with 8 teams participating.

Thank you to Jorienne for contributing the prizes – bottles of fine wine for the winning team and the individual winners of Heads and Rails and Left and Right and coffee vouchers for the runners up.

What a night at Havelock North in April!  Ended up a full house with no chairs left, a lot of noise, a load of beers and wines and a bit of knowledge!

$896.30 plus raised toward the Nationals. A big thank you to Niall who gave back his $36 prize in the Irish Raffle to the cause! Hastings – the challenge is on – let’s beat this total next month.

All comers welcome. Support Squash Eastern and support Hastings. If last night is anything to go by it will be a cracker!!

Thanks again Bethne, aka Miss Foff, for making it such a laugh for everyone, and to your ever-patient, Barry, for marking. Also, can’t forget Rakairoa and Winona-Jo Joyce for being runners – couldn’t have done it without you.

Congratulations to The Masters (Murray Sutherland’s team) who pulled off the win, with Wise Up (captained by David Russel one point behind and Dixie Chicks (Jorienne Matthews and party) a further point behind in 3rd.

Thanks again to our prize donators – Ka Tahi, Ocean Spa, Unique Nails, Java Bean Cafe & Suds Pro Shop.

A great night at HBLTS with a total of $580.70 raised towards the Nationals.

A huge thank-you to the 7 teams who took part in Bethne Gardner’s quiz – entered by Tania Willis, Annie Dennehy (x2), Ron Rench, Garry Collins, Jenny & Sue Roberts.

Clashing with the Taupo concert, numbers were reduced but having the quiz supplemented by an Irish Raffle, Heads and Tails & True & False, the overall result was marvellous!

Many thanks to Napier City Council (Ocean Spa) for donating the Adult Swim vouchers for the First Prize (won by Six of the Best – Sue Roberts’s team), Fuse Cafe for a free coffee for each of the runners-up (Fact Hunt – Willis family and friends, after a tie break) and to Ginelle Deakin of Santana Hair Salon for 2x$30 vouchers which went to the winners of the Heads & Tails and True or False.

The jelly bean count is ongoing as no-one has yet guessed the correct number of jelly beans in the glass – so keep guessing, the glass is on the bar at the club.

Sponsorship – Napier City Council

A huge thank-you to Napier City Council who have kindly donated $3,000 towards the cost of the Live Streaming of the Individual Event – Quarter Finals, Semis and Finals will be shown live from the glass back (Court 4) at Havelock North on Friday 30th June, Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July.

In between matches, the live streaming will be show-casing Hawke’s Bay – a great vehicle for giving everyone a taste of our beautiful region.

Sponsorship & Funding –

A big thank-you to Ocean Spa, Fuse Cafe, Ka Tahi Wines and Santana Hair Salon for donating prizes towards the forthcoming Quiz Nights.  Your support is much appreciated.
